Insulin Pen Accuracy and Visual Impairment
In one of the first studies to look at insulin pen accuracy among people with visual impairment, researchers asked 80 participants—half of whom couldn’t read regular print—to each inject 10 doses of insulin into a ball. All participants used an insulin pen with either written directions or an audio recording of those instructions. The researchers saw no difference in injection or dosing errors between people with vision problems and those who could see well. The study provides preliminary evidence that insulin pens (which carry a warning against use by people with impaired vision and don’t come with recorded instructions) can safely be used by people who have eye problems.
